Crooked Stave Petite Sour Raspberry

Brewery: Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project
Country: USA
ABV: 4.5%
Style: American Wild Ale

Brewer Description: (from bottle) Wild ale aged in oak with raspberries.

My rating: 3
My beeradvocate.com rating: 4.06
My ratebeer.com rating: 3.9

Intro: A 375ml bottle with surprisingly no bottled on date (not sure when they removed the date from the back label). Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.
Appearance: A very nice ruby candy red colour with a two finger pinkish head that dissipated fairly quickly and left sparse to no lacing.
Aroma: Tart and candy raspberry with hints of grape and oak.
Taste: Tart, lightly sour raspberry, raspberry jam and apple cider with a hint of oak. It’s not as fruity as expected as the base wild ale is quite noticeable.
Mouthfeel: Medium to light bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: This looked great and as I poured it out, I had high expectations. However it’s taste fell a bit flat and one dimensional compared to other sour and wild ales with raspberries. It’s still quite good, but just not as complex as it could be.

Crooked Stave Raspberry Origins

Brewery: Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project
Country: USA
ABV: 7.5%
Style: American Wild Ale

Brewer Description: (from bottle) Burgundy Sour Ale aged in oak barrels with raspberries.

My rating: 4
My beeradvocate.com rating: 4.42
My ratebeer.com rating: 4.3

Intro: A 375ml bottle, bottled in December 2015. Poured into a Cantillon ballon glass.
Appearance: A dark burgundy ruby red colour with a just over one finger off pink with a dark orange hue head that dissipated fairly quickly to a thin cap with some nice lacing.
Aroma: Very nice sweet and tart raspberry jammy aromas with perhaps a hint of oak.
Taste: Sour and tart raspberries and lemon to begin, followed by some light sweet jammy raspberries and a hint of oak. It finishes sour again with lemon, some citric acidity and a touch of grapes.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate to light carbonation and a dry-ish finish.
Overall: The aromas were stunning and while the taste didn’t quite match up to the aroma, it was still very good.

Crooked Stave Silly Cybies

Brewery: Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project
Country: USA
ABV: 9%
Style: American Wild Ale

Brewer Description: (from bottle) Belgian Style Dark Ale aged in oak barrels with raspberries.

My rating: 5
My beeradvocate.com rating: 4.71
My ratebeer.com rating: 4.5

Intro: A 375ml bottle, bottled in November 2015. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.
Appearance: A clear and extremely dark red colour with a two fingered tan-ish red head that had decent retention and left some nice lacing.
Aroma: Intense freshly crushed raspberries and raspberry jam.
Taste: Sour and tart with a combination of mixed berries; raspberry, blackberry and blueberry. It is also very jammy but the sweet only lightly shows through the tartness.
Mouthfeel: Dry, medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: This is amazing. I don’t get any of the 9% ABV which is great, but I’m also not getting much of the oak barrels that it was supposedly aged in, which while disappointing, actually meant that it was very raspberry jammy and tasty. Crooked Stave have done it again with Silly Cybies, which is a must buy for me.
