Stone Ghost Hammer IPA

Brewery: Stone Brewing Co.
Country: USA
ABV: 6.7%
Style: American IPA
Other Notes: 56 IBUs. Featured hops – Loral

Brewer Description: (from can) A fermenting beer never slumbers. Consequently, there is always scattered activity tending our precious beers throughout the dark hours. In these late nights and wee hours that hallowed responsibility fall to the shoulders of the overnight Brew Crew. These brewing vanguards brave the long nights, often alone, to do what needs to be done. Most areas of the brewery are dark or in shadows. Throughout the night the cellars resonate with the occasional knocking of expanding and contracting pipes. It can be a bit spooky to hear the brewery creak and groan as if possessed by a spirit randomly knocking about with a mallet. This IPA, brewed with a striking array of hops, honors our intrepid overnight team by naming it after their mischievous poltergeist companion – the Ghost Hammer.

Intro: A 330ml can, canned on 18th May 2017, with an enjoy by date of 18th May 2018. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.
Appearance: A lightly hazy golden colour with a just under two finger white head that had pretty good retention and left nice lacing.
Aroma: Lemon zest, floral tea, dank pine, herbal and a light spicy pepper feel.
Taste: Floral and herbal character is quite strong with lots of fruity lemon, lime and melon in the background. There is also some pine, honey and a light pepper bite on the finish.
Mouthfeel: Crisp, light bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: This is just ok for me as I’m not too fond of overly floral flavours and unfortunately for me, this IPA really has quite a bit. The citrus and melon combo was nice, but I just couldn’t get away from the floral.

Intro: A 330ml can with a best before date of 15th November 2017. Poured into a Mikkeller tasting glass.
Appearance: A hazy dark orange colour with a two finger white head that had good retention and left nice lacing.
Aroma: Candied pineapple, passion fruit, grapefruit, pine and caramel.
Taste: Sweet and only lightly bitter, caramel, citrus rind, honey, pine and surprisingly strong alcohol especially since it was well hidden with Citra and Mosaic.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: Aromas were pretty nice but the surprisingly strong alcohol in the taste was not pleasant on the palate. Not as good as Citra and Mosaic.

Intro: A 330ml can with a best before date of 15th November 2017. Poured into a Mikkeller tasting glass.
Appearance: A lightly hazy golden orange colour with a two finger frothy white head that had good retention and left nice lacing.
Aroma: Orange juice, honey, pine and caramel with hints of grapefruit.
Taste: Bittersweet orange juice, grapefruit, pine and caramel while at the same time, quite boozy.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate to low carbonation.
Overall: This was one was not really for me. My least favourite of the four single hop IIPA’s that I tried. It was the clear booziness that took away from my fully appreciating this.
