Simply fantastic liaison with a festive roast, light mousse with fresh fruits or aromatic apple fritters with vanilla ice cream. Be careful – it could be LOVE!

Intro: A 750ml bottle with a best before date of 15th January 2018. Poured into a Riedel weizen glass.
Appearance: A clear copper amber colour with a one finger light beige head that dissipated fairly quickly while leaving some lacing.
Aroma: Freshly crushed apple juice, red grapes, plum and brown sugar with light caramel in the background.
Taste: Sweet fruitiness, plum, prune, raisin, grape and apple. Honey and caramel sweetness and a touch of peppery spice come through on the finish along with a hint of boozy alcohol.
Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with light carbonation.
Overall: I’m a big fan of Schneider, but this one just didn’t work out for me. Too much sweetness, the spice and the booziness just clashed and made it hard for me to finish.

Intro: A 500ml bottle with a best before date of 1st February 2017 and poured into a Riedel weizen glass.
Appearance: It poured a rather dull and cloudy orange copper colour with a two finger white head that had decent retention and eventually settled to a thin creamy layer and left nice lacing.
Aroma: Strong floral and herbal notes with orange pith and orange peel with a touch of bready malts.
Taste: Quite similar to the aroma, there is strong orange pith and orange juice flavours followed by grapefruit, floral, herbal and grass with a hint of spice, mango and bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: I can see why others might enjoy Tap 5, but for me, I’m on the fence with this one; maybe even leaning slightly towards buying it again as it is very easy to drink and does not feel anywhere near the 8.2% abv. My main conflict was the strong floral aromas and flavours which were not my favourite.

Schneider Weisse Tap X Mathilda Soleil

Brewery: Weisses Bräuhaus G. Schneider & Sohn GmbH
Country: Germany
ABV: 7%
Style: German Weizenbock
Other Notes: 2015 Limited Edition available from mid-March 2015.

Brewer Description: (from tag on bottle) “Mathilda Soleil” – the unique special edition, named after our strong-minded head of the brewery, Mathilde Schneider (in 1907 she presented Bavaria’s first wheat doppelbock). Her pioneering spirit is our claim today – thanks to this new, specially cultivated hops, this special and limited wheat beer edition brings a sparkling and unique treat. It is spicy and nutty with a sunny and refreshing note of apples, pears and quince and still has a dry and drinkable finish – it is the perfect drink for sunny afternoons just by itself or to paired with lightly spicy or with nutty dishes. Cheers, Mathilda!

Aroma: Sweet banana, clove, brown sugar and light caramel.
Taste: Starts with banana and clove followed by citrus, floral, apple, pear elements and light spice.

Schneider Weisse Aventinus Eisbock

Brewery: Weisses Bräuhaus G. Schneider & Sohn GmbH
Country: Germany
ABV: 12%
Style: German Eisbock
Other Notes: 15 IBUs. Hops – Hallertauer Tradition and Magnum. Malts – 60% wheat malt, 40% barley malt from the region of Kelheim.

Brewer Description: (from website) Stronger than strong. Powerful aromas and an intense flavor.

Mahogany, nearly black Eisbock. The aroma reminds of ripe plums with a hint of bitter almonds and marzipan displaying strong characteristics of banana and clove. It is full and warming on your palate. The ideal digestive after a great dish.

Aventinus Eisbock is a class by its own. Legend has it that Aventinus barrels froze during transport in cold winter days. Brewers tasted the liquid that had remained unfrozen and were most deligthed. As the water freezes before the alcohol, what remains is a concentrated Aventinus – concentrated in aroma and in alcohol. We can offer this delight at any time of the year.

Intro: A 330ml bottle with a best before date of 5th May 2020. Using Tap 6 as its base is a very good start.
Appearance: It poured a dark brown colour with a reddish/purple tint. There was barely any head other than a thin tan coloured layer and not much lacing.
Aroma: Sweet plum, grape, bubblegum, caramel with some light booze.
Taste: Dark fruits, grape, plum, prune, bubblegum, syrup.
Mouthfeel: Mid to full bodied with high carbonation.
Overall: My first Eisbock and a very good one at that. Considering its 12% ABV, although there was a small amount of alcohol in the nose, there was none in the taste. Very easy to drink and wish I had a few more bottles on hand to age.
