Gweilo Stout

Brewery: Gweilo Brewery
Country: Hong Kong
ABV: 5.5%
Style: American Stout
Other Notes: 35 IBUs. Core Range

Brewer Description: (from can) Gweilo Stout is decadently rich and full bodied whilst remaining sessionable at 5.5%. The unique blend of malts delivers a coffee and chocolate profile with notes of almond. This compliments the creaminess from the oats, producing a deeply satisfying stout.

Intro: A 330ml can with a best before date of 27th January 2020. Poured into a Spiegelau Stout glass.
Appearance: Dark brown in colour with a two finger beige head that had decent retention while leaving only sparse lacing.
Aroma: Roasty, dark malt, chocolate, coffee, brown sugar and light biscuit.
Taste: Roasty, dark malt, light sweetness, chocolate, coffee, light caramel, slight charcoal, and light biscuit.
Mouthfeel: Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation.
Overall: Ever so slightly watered down on the flavour especially when it warmed a bit and the slight charcoal in the flavour wasn’t my favourite, but it still has nice roasty, chocolate and coffee notes.

Anderson Valley Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrel Stout

Brewery: Anderson Valley Brewing Company
Country: USA
ABV: 6.9%
Style: American Stout
Other Notes: Aged to perfection in bourbon barrels

Brewer Description: (from website) Aged for three months in Wild Turkey® Bourbon barrels, this luxurious stout has a deep ebony hue and a beautiful mahogany head. The woody, vanilla-like notes imparted by the barrels mingle with aromas of fresh baked bread, toffee, and espresso and envelop the rich chocolate and roasted barley flavors with a fine bourbon character.

Our exclusive partnership with Wild Turkey® gives us a world class, consistent source of barrelage, allowing our brewers to explore new frontiers in barrel-aged craft beer. Since its introduction, Wild Turkey® has maintained a distinctive distillation and aging process that gives it a smooth taste and a lingering flavor. They also use differentiated process whereby the bourbon is distilled at a low proof to seal in its flavors. Very little water is added to the bourbon, resulting in a full-flavored authentic taste similar to what one would get straight out of the barrel. Wild Turkey is a genuine drink with a sought after “burn” that comes from its high proof, an attribute fundamental to the brand and critical in maintaining its authentic bourbon characteristics.

Intro: A 650ml bottle with no clear bottled on or best before date. Poured into an Anderson Valley ‘can’ glass.
Appearance: Dark brown to black in colour with a big almost four finger tanned head that had pretty good retention and left some lacing.
Aroma: Roasty, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla with hints of coffee and oak.
Taste: Bourbon sweetness and oak with only hints of any roast, chocolate or stout in the background. The roastiness comes out more as it warms, but in the end still not enough for me.
Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with soft carbonation.
Overall: Too much bourbon and a lack of stout identity for me. For the amount of bourbon, body was also lower than I prefer.

Outcast Last Minute Stout

Brewery: Outcast Brewing
Country: Canada
ABV: 7.5%
Style: American Stout
Other Notes: Stout with vanilla, hazelnut and chocolate added. Brewed at Coulee Brew Co. for Outcast Brewing

Brewer Description: (from can) We do our best work under stress. So with this brew, we knew we wanted to brew a bold stout but had no idea what we wanted to add to it… until four days after it went into the fermenter. This stout is bold and flavourful, with a nice smooth and roasty character that lets the additives shine. There’s no minute, like the last minute.

Intro: A 473ml can, with a canned on date that really isn’t too visible, but I would guess 1st November 2017, ‘nearly didn’t happen’. Poured into a snifter glass.
Appearance: A dark dark brown to black colour with a one finger tanned head that dissipated fairly quickly but left some nice spotty lacing.
Aroma: Vanilla, chocolate, cocoa, hazelnut, cream, honey with light roastiness and a touch of coffee.
Taste: Sweet-ish, light roast, vanilla, creamy coffee, hazelnut, caramel malt, biscuit, coffee and chocolate with a lightly earthy herbal finish.
Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium bodied with moderate to light carbonation.
Overall: Nice and tasty with good vanilla, creamy and nutty flavours.

Intro: A 330ml bottle with a best before date of 4th January 2018. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.
Appearance: It poured black in colour with a less than one finger brown head that dissipated quickly and left only sparse to no lacing.
Aroma: Roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and brown sugar.
Taste: Roasty malt and milk coffee with only hints of chocolate, vanilla and oak.
Mouthfeel: Medium to light bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: This was ok, but given the name, even if its just the coffee beans aged in bourbon barrels, I was expecting some bourbon flavours, but unfortunately, I got nothing at all.
