Stu Mostów WRCLW Baltic Porter Salted Caramel Nitro

Brewery: Browar Stu Mostów
Country: Poland
ABV: 9.1%
Style: Porter – Baltic
Other Notes: 40 IBUs

Brewer Description: (from website) The intense, malty aroma of the Baltic Porter extractive base is enhanced by the addition of caramelised sugar in the form of roasted caramel and non-iodised rock salt. In this way, we have created an exceptionally delicious and aromatic combination, which is bound into a dessert-like whole by the velvety texture obtained through nitrogen saturation!

Intro: A 330ml bottle, with a best before date of 23rd December 2023. Poured into a snifter glass.
Appearance: Dark dark brown to black in colour with a thin tanned head that dissipated quickly, but left some nice lacing.
Aroma: Roasted malt, chocolate, sponge cake, caramel, brown sugar, honey.
Taste: Sweet, sweet malt, chocolate, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, cream.
Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium to full bodied, with soft carbonation.
Overall: Very nice aroma, but for the taste, with ‘salted caramel’ in the name, I get no salt at all, which was unfortunate, as it would have helped balanced out the sweetness, that I felt was a little strong.

Intro: A 330ml red waxed bottle, with a best before date of 30th December 2023. Poured into what I guess is a water glass (being all that I could find at the hotel late at night).
Appearance: Poured a dark cola brown in colour with pretty much no head and no lacing.
Aroma: Coconut, milk chocolate, dark fruit, raisins, prune, with maybe a hint of vanilla.
Taste: Moderate sweetness, dessert like, chocolate, raisins, prunes, coconut, vanilla.
Mouthfeel: Rich, full bodied with soft carbonation.
Overall: An enjoyable sipper that was rich, but surprisingly not too sweet. Although the barrel influence didn’t seem too apparent, there was lots of good coconut, chocolate and dark fruit notes.

Intro: A 330ml bottle, with a best before date of 23rd December 2023. Poured into a snifter glass.
Appearance: Dark dark brown to black in colour, with a thin brown head that disappeared quickly, while leaving nice spotty lacing.
Aroma: Roasty, dark malt, coffee, chocolate, wafer biscuit, with light nutty, raisin and vanilla notes.
Taste: Roasty, bitter, dark chocolate, coffee, biscuit, nutty, hazelnut, light caramel sweetness, and notes of vanilla. Finish is an enjoyable lasting bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Creamy, velvety, smooth, medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.
Overall: Unfortunately I did not know that this was a nitro beer until after it was poured as the word ‘nitro’ was not so obvious on the bottle to me. Therefore I didn’t do the aggressive vertical pour and didn’t get as much of the nice tiny bubbles and cascading effect as I could have. Having said that, this was a great beer, with wonderful bitterness and strong coffee and chocolate flavours.

Penyllan The Mistress Bourbon

Brewery: Penyllan Brewery
Country: Denmark
ABV: 13%
Style: Baltic Porter
Other Notes: At Penyllan we focus on brewing small batches of beer, aged slowly on wood with our house culture of wild yeast. We are inspired by the changing seasons and the wealth of ingredients available to us on our beautiful island

Brewer Description: (from bottle) The Mistress is inspired by the strong and dark baltic porters that, for centuries, has been brewed and consumed by people around the Baltic Sea. Among them the inhabitants of the island where our brewery is. Brewed traditionally with a mix of domesticated and wild yeast and then put to rest in freshly emptied bourbon barrels for a full four years.

Black and viscous with a small tan head. Aroma is dominated by tobacco, leather, dried fruit, smoke, and warm asphalt. Mellow carbonation and slick mouthfeel with complex flavors of dark chocolate, coffee, burned sugar and black cherries. The bourbon character is well integrated and manifests as vanilla, wood and a hint of warming alcohol. Long mouth coating aftertaste with sticky caramel sweetness and lingering roasted bitterness.

Intro: A 750ml bottle, bottle 432 of 858, 2015 vintage, with a best before date of May 2030. Poured into a snifter glass.
Appearance: Dark dark brown to black in colour with a thin tanned head that dissipated quickly but left some sparse but spotty lacing.
Aroma: Leather, roasted malts, dark fruit, plum, prunes, bourbon, with light notes of chocolate.
Taste: Sweet, roasty, chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, molasses, dark fruit, plum, oak, bourbon, vanilla.
Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.
Overall: Flavours were nice and complex in little sips, but the sweetness was too intense for me to drink too much at a time. Was hoping for more roasty bitterness to help balance out the sweetness.
