Blaugies Cerises

Brewery: Brasserie de Blaugies
Country: Belgium
ABV: 6%
Style: Belgian Saison
Other Notes: 2020 BXL BeerFest beer pack

Brewer Description: (from BXLBeerFest FB page) Saison with sweet cherry juice added.

My rating: 3
My beeradvocate.com rating: 3.24
My ratebeer.com rating: 3.1

Intro: A 750ml corked and caged bottle from the 2020 BXL beer pack, with a best before date of end of 2024. Poured into a 3 Fonteinen stemmed glass.
Appearance: A hazy orange amber colour with a big three finger off white head that had excellent retention and left lots of nice lacing.
Aroma: Floral, cherry blossom, saison yeasty, pepper spice, citrusy, orange peel, with light cherry notes.
Taste: Cherry candy, cough medicine, lightly tart, yeasty, bready, wheat, saison like, peppery spice, citrus zest, bitter finish.
Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: The cherry appears at the very beginning as candy like cough medicine, which I am actually fine with, but it disappears almost immediately to a yeasty, bready, saison with peppery spice, before finishing with a lasting bitterness. It was this middle and end flavour profile that was too yeasty, bitter, and a little weird. And sadly, the cherry just didn’t last very long.

Alvinne Cuvée de Mortagne Sauternes

Country: Belgium
ABV: 12.8%
Style: Belgian Quadrupel

My ratebeer.com rating: 3.6

Intro: A 330ml bottle, with a best before date of June 2023. Poured into a Chimay goblet glass.
Appearance: A hazy dark brown colour with a very thin beige head that disappeared immediately and no lacing.
Aroma: Sweet malt, slight vinous, red wine, grape, berries, apple, raisin, prunes, oak, with notes of caramel.
Taste: Sweet, candied dried fruit, prunes, raisin, grapes, oak, chocolate, caramel, and a light bitter herbal finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.
Overall: It’s definitely a sipper with the booze and sweetness. Maybe a bit too sweet for me with lots of dark candied dried fruit and caramel. Still, the aroma and flavours were nicely complex with good barrel character.

Carbon Brews Little Rich Lupulins v.6

Brewery: Carbon Brews
Country: Hong Kong
ABV: 6%
Style: New England / Hazy IPA
Other Notes: 22 IBUs. Malts – Pilsner, Oats, Vienna and Carahell. Hops – HBC 630, Sabro and Nelson Sauvin. Yeast – London III. Experience – Fresh, juicy

Brewer Description: (from postcard) Some of our favourite hops right now are HBC630, Nelson Sauvin and Sabro, so we piled them into the dry hop resulting in a juicy beer packed full of flavour. Initial burst of pineapple, lime and candied cherry followed by a subtle coconut and white grape character.

Intro: A 330ml can, with a best before date of 12th February 2021, so should be less than two weeks in the can. Poured into a Holy Mountain tulip glass.
Appearance: A hazy but murky orange colour with an almost two fingered white head that had decent retention and left some nice lacing.
Aroma: Pineapple juice, lime, orange pith, citrus zest, with notes of mango.
Taste: Light to moderate bitterness, citrus pith, lemon zest, lime, grapefruit, melon, with a hint of coconut here and there on the finish.
Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: Personally I preferred the original version more as the stone fruit flavours were more my thing. I believe the change was partly due to not being able to source certain hops in the current environment, which is fine as I enjoy trying different beers. In addition, there was also the mention of candied cherry in its description, and I love candied cherries a lot, but I don’t even get a hint of that here in the aroma or flavour. All that being said, this was still fresh and enjoyable with citrus pithy and melon flavours coming through strongest.

Oskar Blues Old Chub

Brewery: Oskar Blues Brewery
Country: USA
ABV: 8%
Style: Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy
Other Notes: 30 IBUs. It’s Like Sputnik, a virtual planetoid

Brewer Description: (from website) Old Chub is a brobdingnagian celebration of aggressively shattering the status quo. This jaw-dropping Scottish strong ale (8% ABV, 30 IBUs) strays far from convention, as it’s brewed with a recklessly bodacious amount of malted barley and specialty grains, and a dash of beechwood-smoked malt. It features semi-sweet flavors of cocoa and coffee, and a wee bit of smoke. It’s a powerful, head-turning trip for malt heads and folks who think they don’t dig dark beer.

Intro: A 12 fl. oz. can, canned on 10th May 2019 ‘eyes up here’. Poured into a snifter glass.
Appearance: A dark amber copper colour with a one finger beige head that dissipated fairly quickly but left lots of nice spotty lacing.
Aroma: Sweet, caramel malt, dark stone fruit, plum, cherry, cherry coke and pine.
Taste: Light sweetness, light roast, chocolate malt, caramel, coffee, with a hint of smoke and dark stone fruit.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with soft carbonation.
Overall: I like the aroma, but flavour while not bad, didn’t quite match my expectation after that initial whiff.

De Ranke Back To Black

Brewery: Brouwerij De Ranke
Country: Belgium
ABV: 9.5%
Style: Wild Ale
Other Notes: Aged on wood

Brewer Description: (from bottle) This beer has been designed as an old Export Porter. It has been brewed as undrinkable bitter and then aged in wood for 9 months. The result is a strong dark beer that has a perfect bitter/sour balance.

My beeradvocate.com rating: 3.75
My ratebeer.com rating: 3.6

Intro: A 750ml bottle with a best before date of 13th October 2021. Poured into a snifter glass.
Appearance: A hazy rusty orange brown colour with a thin beige head that dissipated fairly quickly but left nice spotty lacing.
Aroma: Tart, plum, prunes, cherry, light funk, with only a hint of roast and chocolate.
Taste: Sour, tart, plum, prunes, raisin, orange, citrus peel, and oak.
Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with moderate to soft carbonation.
Overall: I was expecting an Imperial Porter so my first impression wasn’t great. But as a Wild or Sour Ale, this was interesting with its citrusy orange finish. The body didn’t seem like it’d support such a high ABV beer, but at the same time, it didn’t feel even close to being 9.5% ABV.
