OWA Sakurambo Lambic

Brewery: OWA Brewery SPRL
Country: Belgium
ABV: 5.5%
Style: Lambic – Fruit
Other Notes: Brewed at Brouwerij De Troch

Brewer Description: (from bottle) Japanese Kriek.

My rating: 3
My beeradvocate.com rating: 3.89
My ratebeer.com rating: 3.7

Intro: A 375ml red paper wrapped cap bottle, 2019 vintage, with a best before date of December 2024. Poured into an OWA short stemmed glass.
Appearance: A clear golden colour with a thin but big bubbled white head that dissipated fairly quickly, and left only sparse lacing.
Aroma: Light funk, sweet cherry, black tea, grapefruit zest, and a touch of wood.
Taste: Sour, tart, black tea, lemon, oak, grapefruit peel, herbal bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with only soft to no carbonation.
Overall: An interesting and/or strange one depending on how you look at it. Generally I couldn’t find much information about the beer though. The bottle says “Japanese Kriek” and under ingredients it says “cherry”, and there is a picture of a cherry on the label, which might be somewhat misleading. Now “Sakurambo” as spelt in the name of the beer, appears to be a black tea with Japanese cherries. There does seem however, to be a Japanese cherry with the name “Sakuranbo”. Which one is used with the lambic, I cannot say for sure. But based on the aroma and flavour, while I do get a good whiff of cherry in the aroma, it seems to be missing in the flavour, whereas the black tea notes are throughout. So seemingly, it’s the black tea with Japanese cherries being used, and the appearance and colour of the beer seem to support this theory as well, with no sign of any red that you’d expect from a kriek lambic. It’s definitely not what I was expecting before opening the bottle, but the aroma was nice, and it was an interesting experiment.

Intro: A 750ml corked and capped bottle, vintage 2022, with a best before date of 2nd October 2042. Poured into a Tilquin stemmed glass.
Appearance: A lightly hazy purplish red colour, with a thin white head that dissipated quickly and left only sparse to no lacing.
Aroma: Fruity, blackcurrant, Ribena, green vines, with a touch of apple peel.
Taste: Much like the aroma, sour, tart, fruity, blackcurrant, Ribena, notes of apple peel and a touch of acidity.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with soft to no carbonation.
Overall: Cassis is front and centre as it should be. Was hoping for more complexity though, and my preference would have been to have at least some carbonation.

Intro: A 750ml corked and capped bottle. Bottled in November 2019. Poured into a Tilquin stemmed glass.
Appearance: A nice slightly hazy ruby cherry red colour, with a thin white head that dissipated quickly to a ring around the glass, while leaving some spotty lacing.
Aroma: Light funk, woody, blackberry, blueberry, grape skin, lemon zest, with notes of vanilla.
Taste: Lightly sour, tart, blackberry, blueberry, green vines, lemon zest, with maybe a hint of vanilla.
Mouthfeel: Light bodied with moderate to soft carbonation.
Overall: The blend sounded great and like it would go together well. It drank quite good, but it didn’t have much complexity, almost just like fruit juice, and lacked any funk and noticeable vanilla.

Appearance: A very nice lightly hazy ruby red colour with a just over one finger white head that had pretty good retention, while leaving some nice lacing.
Aroma: Fruity, jammy, raspberry, cherry, lightly tart, and a touch woody.
Taste: Sour, tart, fruity, cherry, raspberry, grape skin, lemon juice, with a slight vinegary bite.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, with moderate carbonation.
Overall: The jammy aroma was wonderful but it didn’t entirely translate into the taste, which was a little more sour, acidic and a touch vinegary.

Stu Mostów WILD No.12 Bière de Soif Peach Cherry Blend 2021

Brewery: Browar Stu Mostów
Country: Poland
ABV: 6%
Style: Wild Ale
Other Notes: Hops – Hersbrucker. 5 IBUs

Brewer Description: (from website) In the bottles of the latest beer from the WILD series we have sealed a blend of our barrel aged Saison and super aromatic “Inka” peaches from Owocowe Zacisze farm and local “Łutówka” cherries from Ireneusz Rudnicki Farm. They were delivered to us personally by the farmers and processed by hand the same day. The beer owes to them not only a wonderful aroma but also a beautiful “rose” color with a small but long-lasting white head. Ends with a truly wild & funky aftertaste.

Intro: A 375ml clear bottle, with a best before date of 8th April 2024. Poured into a Tilquin stemmed glass.
Appearance: A careful pour to keep the yeast in the bottle led to a hazy rosé pink colour with a one finger white head that dissipated fairly quickly, while leaving only sparse to no lacing.
Aroma: Fruity, lightly tart, rhubarb, peach, cherry pits, with a splash of sherry vinegar.
Taste: Lightly sour and tart, peach, cherry pits, cherry skin, with some funky notes.
Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with moderate to soft carbonation.
Overall: Enjoyable aromas and flavours. Cherry was a little muted, and was expecting and hoping for higher carbonation, but generally it was good.
