Mountain Goat Rare Breed Pulped Fiction Blood Orange IPA

Brewery: Mountain Goat Beer Pty. Ltd.
Country: Australia
ABV: 7.8%
Style: American Double IPA
Other Notes: Water – Melbourne water. Malt – Vienna, Redback, American Ale, Maris Otter, Pale Crystal and Shepherd’s Delight. Hops – Citra and Mosaic. Adjunct – Blood Orange.

Brewer Description: (from bottle) This is a Double IPA with a blast of real blood orange juice added during secondary fermentation. The tang from the juice combines with the citrus-like characters of Citra and Mosaic hops creating a sensation equal parts bitter and tart. It’s big, clean and thirst quenching.

Intro: A 640ml bottle with a best before date of 30th November 2017. Poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass.
Appearance: Poured a clear copper colour with a slight orange hue, a one finger off white head that settles to a thin layer with sticky lacing.
Aroma: Pine, citrusy grapefruit and orange rind, pith and peel with hints of tropical mango and caramel malt.
Taste: Citrus orange rind and pith with grapefruit peel bitterness, some resinous pine, with a good touch of sweet caramel malt and blood orange to balance.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate to light carbonation.
Overall: This was nice and easy to drink. A good balance between the hop bitterness and sweet-ish caramel malt. It’s probably on the border of being between an IPA and Double IPA, but overall, I’d say that it’s an enjoyable Double IPA.

Intro: A 330ml bottle with a best before date of 13th September 2017. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.
Appearance: A hazy milky dark yellow orange colour with a big two finger white head that dissipates quite quickly but left some sparse sticky lacing. Unfortunately this dull dark milky colour was rather unattractive.
Aroma: Fruit bomb with candied pineapple, mango and mandarin orange.
Taste: Lightly tart with bitter fruitiness. Mango, mandarin, grapefruit and orange zest with a touch of biscuit.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate, spritzy carbonation.
Overall: Despite its unappealing appearance, it’s juicy fruity aromas and taste do make this beer enjoyable.

Intro: A 1 pint can with no canned on or best before date. Poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass.
Appearance: A clear golden copper orange colour with a just over two finger off white head with great retention and nice lacing.
Aroma: Citrusy orange juice, orange zest, grapefruit and caramel malt with a touch of mango.
Taste: Citrusy like the aroma with grapefruit and orange zest bitterness, some pine, and caramel malt. The finish has a nice lasting bitterness and its not overly sweet.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: This was nice and I enjoyed this. For me, the key was that it was not overly sweet like so many DIPAs seem to be these days.

Appearance: It poured a clear copper amber colour with a two finger foamy off white head that had good retention and left nice lacing.

Taste: Bitter, medicinal, sage and pine upfront with a juniper, wood and herbal finish.

Stone 20th Anniversary Citracado IPA

Brewery: Stone Brewing Co.
Country: USA
ABV: 9%
Style: American Double IPA
Other Notes: 80 IBUs. Hops – Nugget, El Dorado, Centennial and Citra

Brewer Description: (from bottle) For 20 years our passion for brewing and our obsession with hops have challenged traditional styles and expectations for beer. So it’s only fitting we commemorate this momentous occasion by crafting a liquid ode to bold brewing that satisfies your hop thirst and pays homage to our flagship San Diego brewery, located on Citracado Parkway (which itself pays homage to the citrus and avocado agricultural history of the region).

“Citracado” also teases the two key ingredients of this beer. “Citra” refers both to the juicy gem of a hop and its citrusy (and tropical) aromas and flavors. “Cado” inspired us to utilize wonderful, native avocado flower honey. Combine the two and the result pours like silk abounds with enough hops to match our excitement for reaching this 20-year milestone. We thank you sincerely for the years of support and pledge that we will, as always, strive to live up to the reasons for your loyalty!

Intro: A 22 oz bomber, bottled on 28th August 2016, poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass.
Appearance: It poured a clear copper amber colour with a huge four finger off white head that had excellent retention and left great lacing.
Aroma: Dank pine, caramel malt with citrusy mandarin, grapefruit and orange zest. Some tropical mango and peaches appear as it warms.
Taste: Citrus grapefruit bitterness, orange zest, lemon and pine with some light malt caramel and breadiness in the background.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate to low carbonation.
Overall: It’s not bad, but I tried Stone’s 5th and 10th Anniversary IPAs over the past week and enjoyed them both slightly more than this 20th Anniversary Citracado IPA.
