Firestone Walker Leo v. Ursus Adversus

Brewery: Firestone Walker Brewing Co.
Country: USA
ABV: 8.2%
Style: American Double IPA
Other Notes: Unfiltered Double India Pale Ale. 55 IBUs. Malts – Pilsner Malt, Wheat Malt, Flaked Oats and Dextrose Sugar. Hops – (Kettle) Citra, Mandarina, Simcoe and Cascade, (Dry Hops) Ekuanot, Mandarina, Azacca and Citra

Brewer Description: (from website) Prodigiously hopped yet nimbly brewed with pilsner malts, Adversus ultimately achieves the improbable: a big, bold IPA made for summertime sipping. A hard-charging blend of Pacific Northwest hops leads the way, loading the nose with notes of stone fruit, pineapple, mango and earthy pine resin. Meanwhile, the use of traditional pilsner malts adds levity and dryness to the palate, allowing for a refreshing texture through the finish. The result is a double IPA that is high on hop aromas, balanced in bitterness and perfect for the long, warm days of summer.

Brewer Description: (from menu) Oh El Dorado. We love you for all that you are – soft and subdued, stonefruity, and herbaceous. A true role player, a supporting actor, a helping hop. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Well, this is your time to step up! We teamed you up with some all stars – Citra & Mosaic – plus a similarly complementary hop in Loral. But this DIPA is about YOU, El Dorado. Shine bright like a diamond!

Bellwoods Goblin Sauce

Brewery: Bellwoods Brewery
Country: Canada
ABV: 8.5%
Style: American Double IPA
Other Notes: DDH Imperial IPA w/ Lupulin Powder

Brewer Description: (from website & menu) A huge Imperial IPA with a simple pale malt bill and a hefty addition of flaked oats. Goblin Sauce is the first Imperial IPA we’ve brewed using Lupulin Powder, a proprietary hop product jam packed with all the good stuff… and we hit it twice for even more punchy aroma. Massive juicy aromas and flavours of peach, mango, cantaloupe and wild berries, a soft round body with very low bitterness and a relatively dry finish.

Aroma: Nice tropical peach, mango and cantaloupe.
Taste: Bitter-ish, peach and cantaloupe with hints of mixed berries.
Mouthfeel: Dry-ish, medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: It was easy to drink but taste was not as juicy as the aroma made it out to be.

Intro: Apologies, backlog review from late July. A 1 pint can, canned on 15th May 2017 and poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.
Appearance: A cloudy dark orange colour with a two finger white head that had good retention and left some sparse lacing.
Aroma: Strong whiff of pineapple followed by citrusy orange, mandarin, melon and pine.
Taste: Sweet and bitter. Biscuit malt sweetness mixed with tropical apricot, pineapple and bitter citrus rind plus pith. Finish is a lingering bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: Not as juicy as a lot of other NE DIPA’s that I’ve tried, but it’s still quite nice.

Intro: A 330ml can with a best before date of 15th November 2017. Poured into a Mikkeller tasting glass.
Appearance: A hazy dark orange colour with a two finger white head that had good retention and left nice lacing.
Aroma: Candied pineapple, passion fruit, grapefruit, pine and caramel.
Taste: Sweet and only lightly bitter, caramel, citrus rind, honey, pine and surprisingly strong alcohol especially since it was well hidden with Citra and Mosaic.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: Aromas were pretty nice but the surprisingly strong alcohol in the taste was not pleasant on the palate. Not as good as Citra and Mosaic.
