My ratebeer.com rating: 4

Intro: A 330ml bottle with a best before date of 14th September 2017. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.
Appearance: A nice hazy golden orange colour with a just under two finger fluffy white head that pretty good retention and lots of nice sticky lacing.
Aroma: Starts tropical with apricot, peach, mango followed by some citrusy grapefruit and mandarin with hints of pine, straw and grass. It’s nice albeit a bit weak.
Taste: Sweet malt, peach, mango, grass with a short lasting grapefruit bitter finish.
Mouthfeel: Light bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: Aroma and taste were actually good, but it would have been better if the aromas were stronger and the finishing taste was longer lasting rather than its current abrupt end.

Orval

Brewery: Brasserie D’Orval S.A.
Country: Belgium
ABV: 6.2%
Style: Belgian Pale Ale

Brewer Description: (from website) The distinctive fruity and bitter taste of Orval beer means it has become a genuine reference in the exclusive world of authentic Trappist beers. Orval beer is a high fermentation beer. The ageing process adds a fruity note, which strikes a subtle balance between the beer’s full-bodied yet complex flavour and bitterness. The beer was first brewed in 1931 and owes its unparalleled taste to the quality of the water, the hops and the yeast used. The brewery has selected very aromatic and unique hop varieties, which hark back to the first brewmaster of Orval, who hailed from Bavaria. The beer’s aromas are very pronounced while maintaining the right level of bitterness thanks to the English method of dry hopping. The various stages of fermentation – combined fermentation with the original yeast and with wild yeast, followed by fermentation in the bottle – mean the beer must age for some time and requires numerous quality controls.

Appearance: A clear copper colour with an almost two finger white head that had great retention and left nice sticky lacing.
Aroma: Very fruity berries, grape, apple and pear with hints of coriander and brett.
Taste: Nice gentle fruitiness, berries, grape, bubblegum and plum with a light tartness, light peppery spice, brett, funk and a hint of banana.
Mouthfeel: Dry-ish, medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: Very nice and very well balanced beer, and a must buy beer in my book.

Intro: A 330ml bottle with a best before date of 23rd October 2023. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.
Appearance: A hazy dark orange, copper, amber colour with a huge two finger fluffy off white head that kept growing out the glass with great retention and lots of sticky lacing.
Aroma: Tart berries, brett, funky, grape with hints of white wine and citrusy mandarin, orange on the back end.
Taste: Lightly sour to start with berries, plum, orange, pine, pepper spice and florally with a lightly bitter finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium to light bodied with low to moderate carbonation.
Overall: This was interesting as it was created as a tribute to Orval, and while there are some similarities, I still preferred Orval (which I had side by side) and which I felt had a smoother and better flavour profile.

Other Notes: Brewed and bottled by Buxton Brewery & Omnipollo at Buxton Brewery

Intro: A 330ml bottle with a best before date of 25th October 2018. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.
Appearance: A hazy pale golden orange colour with a two finger white head that had pretty good retention and left lots of nice lacing.
Aroma: Vanilla, orange, lemon peel and stone fruit.
Taste: Biscuit malt, sweet orange, vanilla and cream soda with a touch of hop bitterness and pepper spice.
Mouthfeel: Light bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: I think they pretty much delivered on what was stated. There was definitely some vanilla ice cream taste, but it also wasn’t the best vanilla ice cream I’ve tasted. At the same time, I’m also not so sure vanilla matches well with a Pale Ale.

Pirate Life Pale Ale

Brewery: Pirate Life Brewing
Country: Australia
ABV: 5.4%
Style: American Pale Ale
Other Notes: 50 IBUs. Malts – Ale Malt, Caramalt and Crystal. Hops – Mosaic and Cascade

Brewer Description: (from website) The ubiquitous Pale Ale. The workhorse of pretty much any modern brewery. The brief we gave ourselves for our flagship beer was that it should be able to be sent to any bar in San Diego and to stand proudly alongside the many great Pales produced in, and around, the west coast of the US. The schematic for a West Coast Pale Ale is bucket loads of big US hops, full malty backbone and a characterful yeast. That is what this Pale Ale is all about. Enjoy as fresh as possible.

Intro: A 355ml can with a hard to read best before date, but I believe it says best before 22nd June 2017. Poured into a Mikkeller stemmed tasting glass.
Appearance: A slightly hazy copper amber colour with a big fluffy three finger off white head that dissipated fairly quickly, leaving some soapy lacing.
Aroma: Piney, citrusy grapefruit, caramel malt with a hint of tropical peach and mango.
Taste: Sweet caramel malt beginning with some tropical and stone fruits. Lightly bitter grapefruit and pine finish.
Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: This is solid! Very easy and enjoyable drinking for any time of day and year.
