Stone 20th Anniversary Encore Series: 15th Anniversary Escondidian Imperial Black IPA

Brewery: Stone Brewing Co.
Country: USA
ABV: 10.8%
Style: American Black IPA
Other Notes: 2011 label, 2016 re-release. 100 IBUs. Hops – Columbus, Citra, Nelson Sauvin and Pacific Jade

Brewer Description: (from bottle) In the 15 years since we entered the craft brewing world, change has come not in a straight line but as an exponential curve. The craft brewing movement has long been called a “revolution.” But today the air is so thick with revolution it’s palpable. No longer is it only an awareness among the faithful; the unconverted are beginning to feel it as well. Denial and ignorance are disappearing in favor of opened eyes, curiosity and the sense that there’s something larger out there. For far too long we have been lied to. For far too long we have been oppressed by the notion that dumbed-down-lowest-common-denominator-mediocrity was all that we could, and should, expect. You might think we’re talking only about the world of brewing, but we’re not. There is a myriad of products out there masquerading as cheeses, coffee, chocolates, breads… hell, there is stuff pretending to be “food” that our great-grandmothers would not recognize as such. Yet the craft brewing movement, together with the artisanal food movement, is making much progress. Where the industrial companies can’t dismiss or bury us, they are attempting to copy us with cheap facsimiles. Yes, chances are if you are holding this bottle, you understand these things to be true about the world of brewing. You also likely understand the importance of our fight at Stone against accepted “norms” over the last 15 years. We believed that America was ready to embrace things made with artistry and passion. You have spoken. Your response has been clear. We are not merely consumers to be spoon-fed whatever commodities need to be unloaded for a profit. We have only just begun to move the needle of this revolution & mediocrity still reigns. Consider that when you reject dumbed down, industrialized food and drink, you also support craft brewing. The line is nearly seamless; we are fighting the same battle. We will not win in our lifetime, as the powers are too entrenched, and the masses too… fooled. And shackled. However, this is a revolution of ideas and of taste, and we will win. How do you want to be viewed by your children, and your children’s children? As a hero, or as the oppressed? (Those who don’t think they have been oppressed are already lost.) Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide. We hope you’ll stand with us. Strong and unyielding. You are needed. This bottle and its glorious contents are a celebration of you, brothers and sisters, and your importance in this fight. Cheers to all we’ve accomplished together in the past 15 years, and cheers to the adventure ahead!

Intro: A 22 oz bomber, bottled on 17th August 2016, to be enjoyed by 23rd November 2016 (drank on 24th, so I’m a day late). Poured into an oversized wine glass.
Appearance: It poured a dark brown near black colour with a one finger tanned head that had pretty decent retention and eventually fades to a thin cap, leaving nice lacing.
Aroma: Roasty malt and light chocolate with nice tropical pineapple, peach and apricot. There’s also a touch of citrus orange and lemon zest, pine and a light char at the end.
Taste: Bittersweet chocolate, light char smoke, followed by strong bitter grapefruit, orange zest and pine. The roastiness comes back and the bitterness lingers on the finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with moderate to low carbonation.
Overall: A nice roasty and hoppy Black IPA. I’m glad that they re-released this.

Stone Enjoy After 07.04.16 Brett IPA

Brewery: Stone Brewing Co.
Country: USA
ABV: 7%
Style: American IPA
Other Notes: 4th Edition. Recommend aging until 07.04.16

Brewer Description: (from bottle) Really? Cellar an IPA? Yes. What you hold in your hands is an experiement. This IPA is spiked at bottling with Brettanomyces, a wild yeast that, over time, brings about charmingly unpredictable complexities of spice, funk, acidity and more. The operative words in our beer-cellaring thesis are “over time.” For those of you who are impatient or like to experiment, the earliest we recommend sampling this beer is 07.04.15. The beer won’t be fully carbonated until that date. Ideally, you’ll want to cellar the beer up to – or beyond – the Enjoy After date to help it reach its full evolutionary potential. At that point, some facets of the Brett characteristics will have mellowed, while others will have become more profound, it all matures into a fascinating and delicious culmination. Individual results will vary… and that’s both the beauty and the intent behind this beer.

Intro: A 1 pint 9.36 fl oz (750ml) corked and caged bottle with an enjoy after 4th July 2016 date, and poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass. As soon as I uncaged it, the cork pretty much wanted to pop itself out.
Appearance: It poured a slightly hazy golden orange colour with a huge four finger fluffy white head that just kept going and going but somehow eventually settles to a pillow-y cap and left lots of lacing.
Aroma: Moderate brett, leathery, barnyard funk with tropical fruitiness and pine in the background.
Taste: Earthy funkiness followed by fruity lemon and pineapple, pepper spice, pine and bitterness on the finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation which was surprising since it looked like it was going to be highly carbonated.
Overall: Other than the bitterness on the finish, and maybe the pine, there really wasn’t much IPA feel left. Maybe a Saison, but at the same time not a spectacular one. It’s ok, I’ll still drink more, but I’m on the fence as to whether I’d get another bottle. I’m glad I tried it though.

Stone 20th Anniversary Encore Series: 6th Anniversary Porter

Brewery: Stone Brewing Co.
Country: USA
ABV: 8%
Style: American Imperial Porter
Other Notes: 2016 release. Drink fresh or age at cellar temp

So we’re celebrating this milestone throughout 2016 by bringing back some fan-favorite beers from our past, using their original recipes and bottle art (with either the classic or new back-label text, depending on which one you get), while looking forward to a future filled with continued creativity, passion and a helluva lot of fun. Stone’s 6th Anniversary Porter
An ode to density, viscosity and the unbearable opaqueness of being…

Considering that we were barrelling down on a beeline path in what might have seemed to be a ruinous (get it?) direction with previous Anniversaries’ IPA offerings to the hop god-hops are not a real religion, but perhaps they should be? Already a large and ravenous throng is ready and willing to offer their palates up on the sacrificial altar unto the not-yet-deity-it might seem that we are grabbing the bottom of the steering wheel, thrusting our full body weight and then some downwards to increase the force to the brakes while downshifting and spinning the wheel in an attempt at a vulpine Starsky & Hutch-esque move (how’s that for a dated-not-pertaining-to-anything ‘70s reference there, Huggy Bear?) to reverse direction in a din of screeching tires and acrid rubber smoke (along with the obligatory camera shot of the lone-rolling hubcap), thus treating our brewery as if it were some sort of asphalt-faring drogher, to which I say a hearty “Nay!” to all that lurpy (which isn’t even a real word, but it sounds cool and seems to somehow be apropos in this context) puerile nonsense, for this is not what it seems by any stretch of the imagination, as it is instead simply a very sharp turn within the context of that which is the Stone Anniversary Ale, allowing us each to glow in our own individually pulchritudinous way as we pay homage with this sui generis “goosed up a notch or three” version of our much loved and equally misunderstood Stone Smoked Porter, which we think is truly the bee’s knees in brewer’s trousers. Capisce? Good. And don’t worry about them succubuses (succubusi?)… our gargoyle is watching.

Note: This logophobic nightmare of a label contains ludicrous amounts of rambling, nonsensical text due to Team Stone members submitting words such as “lurpy” and “Huggy Bear” for Greg to incorporate into the copy for the original release.

Stone Enjoy By 05.30.16 Tangerine IPA

Brewery: Stone Brewing Co.
Country: USA
ABV: 9.4%
Style: American Double IPA
Other Notes: Enjoy by 30th May 2016. Brewed to be enjoyed within 37 days.

Brewer Description: (from bottle) Our all-important , hop-driven quest to deliver the most devastatingly fresh IPA on the planet facilitated a paradigm shift in 2012 with the launch of Stone Enjoy By IPA. Not only did we brew this beer with more than 10 different hops, we brewed it specifically NOT to last. Acclaimed for its groundbreakingly short shelf life, this intense double IPA brought forth a whole new concept of what constitutes “fresh” – guaranteeing fans the ultimate level of hoppiness. For Stone Enjoy By Tangerine IPA, we added the tangy zeal of a mandarin fruit’s juicy nectar. The result… freshness has never tasted as ripe for the picking as this does right now.

Appearance: It poured a clear golden orange colour with a two finger off white head that had decent retention and left nice lacing.
Aroma: Sweet zesty and juicy mandarin and a hint of grapefruit zest and pith.
Taste: Very citrusy with sweet mandarin and bitter grapefruit pith and zest. There’s a hint of pine and caramel malt with the bitterness nice and lasting.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: For some reason I thought I had a bit more time to drink this. But in any case, I did manage to drink it within its limit. It was a great Double IPA with nice mandarin sweetness and grapefruit bitterness that lasts.

Stone Americano Stout

Brewery: Stone Brewing Co.
Country: USA
ABV: 8.7%
Style: American Imperial Stout
Other Notes: 65 IBUs. Hops – Amarillo, Cascade, Chinook and Columbus. A decidedly American Imperial Stout with espresso.

Brewer Description: (from bottle) The coffee notes in Stone Americano Stout are bold, rich and full of American swagger. We incorporated a mother lode of artisanal espresso beans into the mash and added in Columbus, Chinook, Amarillo and Cascade hops to invigorate the coffee taste with a slight citrus and resin hop presence.

Coffee roasting, like artisanal brewing, has risen to be a true art form in recent decades. Techniques that blend art, science and ingenuity have allowed roasters to create coffees that offer incredible depth, complexity and nuance. When it came to selecting our coffee, we chose San Diego roasters Ryan Bros. Coffee. These are the same guys who contributed their art to our sought-after 2013 Stone ESPRESSO Imperial Russian Stout. Their fantastic espresso helped us achieve the perfect match to our beer, one that’s certain to satisfy your coffee fixation. Rest assured… not a single decaf bean was used in the process.

Intro: A 12 fl oz bottle with a bottled on 22nd January 2016 date. Poured into a Moonzen teku glass.
Appearance: It poured an extremely dark brown with a one finger tanned head that had good retention and left only a little lacing.
Aroma: Strong espresso aromas and sweet chocolate/mocha with a hint of cinnamon and coconut.
Taste: Espresso and dark chocolate. There was a bit of sweetness midway through, but the finish was a nice long lasting bitterness.
Mouthfeel: Mid to full bodied with low carbonation.
Overall: A nice Imperial Stout with coffee that has a wonderful lasting bitter finish. I think my one gripe is that it was not as full bodied as it could have been.
