Mills Running Beer

Brewery: Mills Brewing
Country: England
ABV: 5.5%
Style: Wild Ale
Other Notes: Mills Brewing make beer with minimal modern intervention, relying on local wild yeast cultures and the influence of nature to ferment

Brewer Description: (from bottle) This beer is a blend of four brews produced in November 2018, January/March 2019 and May 2020. The worts were made using malted rye and aged hops. They fermented and matured in a mixture of oak barrels previously used by French Burgundy wine and American Bourbon whiskey producers. Running beer was the first recipe we designed for Mills Brewing. This is blend eight.

We still have no set recipe for Running Beer, but blend to a similar flavour profile each time. We produce a variety of worts and welcome the natural variation we are given by the barrels.

Taste: Tart, lightly sour, funky, musty, green apple, lemon zest, lightly vinous, oak.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate to soft carbonation.
Overall: Interesting aroma and flavours, maybe not my favourite, but it does work.

Intro: A 473ml can, canned on 15th February 2022, with a best before date of 15th February 2025. Poured into a snifter glass.
Appearance: Black in colour with a nice one finger tanned brown head that had great retention and left lots of lacing.
Aroma: Roasty, dark chocolate, coffee, chili pepper, with slight vinous notes.
Taste: Creamy, roasty, bitter notes, dark chocolate, coffee, pepper, chili, light spice, with slight vinous notes.
Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with moderate to soft carbonation.
Overall: Was hoping for more chili spice as it was definitely more muted than I thought it would be, and maybe softer carbonation. But the base was good and the barrel notes did go nicely with what chili I could feel.

Intro: A 330ml red waxed bottle, with a best before date of 30th December 2023. Poured into what I guess is a water glass (being all that I could find at the hotel late at night).
Appearance: Poured a dark cola brown in colour with pretty much no head and no lacing.
Aroma: Coconut, milk chocolate, dark fruit, raisins, prune, with maybe a hint of vanilla.
Taste: Moderate sweetness, dessert like, chocolate, raisins, prunes, coconut, vanilla.
Mouthfeel: Rich, full bodied with soft carbonation.
Overall: An enjoyable sipper that was rich, but surprisingly not too sweet. Although the barrel influence didn’t seem too apparent, there was lots of good coconut, chocolate and dark fruit notes.

Other Notes: 60 IBUs, 6th Anniversary

Brewer Description: (from website) Imperial Stout B.A. is our birthday tradition – this year we used the addition of peanut butter and Four Roses Bourbon barrels, which gave the aromas of vanilla, coconut, spices and of course – American whiskey! Intro: A 330ml gold waxed bottle, 6th Anniversary, 2020 vintage, with a best before date of 4th December 2023. Poured into what I guess is a water glass (being all that I could find at the hotel late at night).
Appearance: Black in colour with a very thin tanned head that dissipated fairly quickly while leaving some sparse lacing.
Aroma: Peanut, peanut butter, chocolate, light roast, bourbon, brown sugar, vanilla.
Taste: Roasty, chocolate, moderate sweetness, caramel, dark fruit, prunes, plum, brown sugar, bourbon, peanut.
Mouthfeel: Creamy, full bodied with soft carbonation.
Overall: Definitely a sipper with interesting aroma and flavours. Peanut notes were quite pronounced, but I would have preferred if it was more peanut butter instead, as per the name.

Métaphore Sapere Aude

Brewery: Métaphore
Country: Czech Republic
ABV: 4.9%
Style: Pilsner – Czech

Brewer Description: (from bottle) This is my quest for a dream beer that straddles the fine line between two worlds – traditional, old world lagers and rustically charming beers of the past. Inspired by the mystery of an earlier era I never experienced and by the environment around us. My poetic vision for a truly refined expression of a lager beer with a sense of place. It was brewed only with local organic ingredients, a generous amount of local Saaz hops and 30% local einkorn. Lagered to perfection for 5 months in a virgin Acacia wood barrel. This gracious lager beer with a sense of place is ready for you to enjoy here and now with friends old and new.
