Against The Grain London Balling

Brewery: Against The Grain Brewery
Country: USA
ABV: 12.5%
Style: English Barleywine

Brewer Description: (from can) Balls Deep! Big, ballsym barmy and barrel aged. London balling is not typical. It’s a skirmish of flavor. The barrel imparts oak and vanilla, mixed with the caramel sweetness from a malt bill with brick, that’ll knock your bloody bollocks around. Hey bloke?… fancy that, and you’ll be gobsmacked.

Intro: A 1 pint can, with no clear canned on or best before date. Poured into a snifter glass.
Appearance: A rusty orange brown colour with some floating sediment and a thin beige head that dissipated fairly quickly, but left some spotty lacing.
Aroma: Sweet malt, caramel, toffee, oak, vanilla, and grapefruit hard candy.
Taste: Sweet, sweet malt, caramel, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, dried dark fruit, raisin, dates, brown sugar, slightly bitter and a touch boozy.
Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: Not my favourite English Barleywine as sweet and boozy doesn’t really work for me. It’s ok to sip, but a whole 1 pint can, took me a good while to finish.

Intro: A 330ml can, with a best before date of 9th May 2020. Poured into a 3 Fonteinen stemmed glass.
Appearance: A murky dirty orange colour with a two finger off white head that dissipated fairly quickly while leaving some lacing.
Aroma: Sweet-ish canned pineapple, pear, peach and passionfruit.
Taste: Sweet and sour although mainly intense sweetness followed by a light tart sourness. Lots of fruit, pear, canned pineapple, canned peach, sugar, with notes of passionfruit and sharp lemon juice.
Mouthfeel: Sharp, light bodied with moderate to soft carbonation.
Overall: Needed more tart and sourness to balance the oversweetness in my opinion, but it is pretty much what it’s described as.

My ratebeer.com rating: 3.4

Intro: A 330ml can, with a best before date of 24th September 2020. Poured into a snifter glass.
Appearance: Dark dark brown in colour with a one finger brown head that dissipated fairly quickly, but left some nice spotty lacing.
Aroma: Light roast, cocoa, chocolate, vanilla, coconut, with a splash of coffee and hints of peaty smoke.
Taste: Moderate to light chili spiciness, vanilla and light chocolate tones.
Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.
Overall: Love the chili in this as it’s prominent but not overpowering. However, the roasty malt and chocolate base was not strong enough to match the chili and even the vanilla flavours were showing up in stronger fashion.

Appearance: It poured dark dark brown to black in colour with a thin half finger brown head that dissipated almost immediately, but left some nice spotty lacing.
Aroma: Sweet, moderate roast, chocolate, brown sugar, licorice, caramel, and toffee, with hints of vanilla, marshmallow, and some nutty notes.
Taste: Roasty, sweet, dark chocolate, caramel, fudgy, brown sugar, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, and coffee, with a light but lasting bitter and boozy finish.
Mouthfeel: Syrupy, full bodied with soft carbonation.
Overall: Aromas were good, but taste was a touch too sweet and syrupy for me. It was still quite drinkable as a slow sipper though.
