Weihenstephaner Vitus

Brewery: Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan
Country: Germany
ABV: 7.7%
Style: German Weizenbock
Other Notes: 17 IBUs

Brewer Description: (from website) Our light-coloured, spicy single-bock, “Vitus” is saturated with fine yeast and a creamy foam. It is a specialty with a round character based on the extra long storage time. The fruity smell of dried apricots joins aromas of citrus, cloves and hints of banana. Full-bodied and sparkling with an effervescent mouthfeel. Thus, the Vitus does not taste like a typical Bock beer but more like a noble, fruity wheat beer. Perfect with red meat, strong cheese and also able to guide desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Intro: A 12 fl. oz. bottle, packaged on 27th July 2018, and poured into a Holy Mountain tulip glass.
Appearance: A very nice clear copper colour with a two finger white head that had good retention, while leaving only some sparse lacing.
Aroma: Sweet malt, pear, honey, bread, light floral.
Taste: Sweet, toffee apple, bread, honey, brown sugar, with a light bitterness to the finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate to high carbonation.
Overall: The light bitterness helps, but on the whole, it was probably too sweet for me.

Weihenstephaner Kristall Weissbier

Brewery: Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan
Country: Germany
ABV: 5.4%
Style: German Kristallweizen
Other Notes: 16 IBUs.

Brewer Description: (from website) In our golden-yellow crystal-clear wheat beer the fresh citrus flavour harmonises very well with spicy banana notes. The fine sparkling gives it a tangy and animated appearance. Throughout summer and winter, it’s a prickling experience. It goes well with fish, seafood, white meat or it can be enjoyed as an aperitif. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Intro: A 500ml bottle with a best before date of 3rd October 2015 and poured into a Riedel weizen glass.
Appearance: Poured a clear very dark brown colour with hints of ruby and a one finger chestnut coloured head that dissipated quite quickly with only light spotty lacing.
Aroma: Malty, treacle, brown sugar, milk chocolate and hints of vanilla.
Taste: Similar to its aromas, there’s malt, burnt sugar, brown sugar, caramel, chocolate and a hint of dark fruit like prune.

Overall: A very nice doppelbock from a great brewer. Just falls behind Celebrator in my book, but definitely something I’d drink again.
